Honda Canada Manufacturing Plant Produces Two-Millionth Civic
ALLISTON, ON (September 29, 2003) - Honda of Canada Mfg. today produced its two-millionth Civic passenger car. The milestone production of the sedan is a testament to the popularity of this vehicle in Canada. The Civic has been the best-selling passenger car in Canada for five consecutive years. Further, up to August of this year, the Civic brand has also been Canada's best selling nameplate, currently leading the sales volume leaders in the historically popular pick-up truck and minivan segments. More than 1.1 million Civics have been sold in Canada since its introduction in 1973.
"The Honda of Canada Manufacturing plant began production in 1986 as part of Honda's world-wide commitment to building vehicles close to where they are sold," said Kalim Ansari, Executive Vice President, Honda Canada Inc. "The plant has steadily grown since that time and is now one of Honda's premier manufacturing facilities."
Honda of Canada Mfg., began building Civics in 1988 with the 3-door body style, producing a total of 37,484 units in that year. In 1992, the 2-door Civic coupe was added to the manufacturing line with production surpassing the 100,000 units-per-year mark. In 1995, coupe production was replaced by the 4-door sedan. Two years later, in June 1997, the one-millionth HCM-produced Civic milestone was reached.
"Canadian-built Civics have always been highly regarded for their value, driving experience and, of course, quality," said Ansari. "Honda is proud to have so many Civics on Canadian roads and around the world."
According to Vaughn Hibbits, Vice President of Administration at Honda of Canada Mfg., "Thanks to the dedication by the Associates at our plant, we've been able to achieve this important milestone. Because of the efforts of our Associates, the Civic has become both a home-grown and world-wide success."
The first Japanese automaker to produce cars in Canada, the HCM plant in Alliston builds vehicles such as the Civic and the Canadian-exclusive Acura EL on one production line. A second line was opened in 1998 to produce the Honda Odyssey minivan and later the Acura MDX Luxury SUV and Honda Pilot SUV. HCM-produced vehicles are sold not only in Canada, but are exported to the United States, Japan and 10 other countries. Together, the HCM plant has an annual capacity of 390,000 units, spans 450 acres (1.9 million square feet) and represents a total investment of $1.8 billion (CDN).
