BFGoodrich® Tires Pass Half Way Mark On Drive Around The World Expedition;
Mud-Terrain T/A® KM Tires Are "Drive Around The World" Tough
Perth, Australia - May 10, 2004 - After driving 16,000 miles for six months, BFGoodrich® Tires has passed the half way mark on the Drive Around The World Longitude Expedition to raise money for Parkinson's Disease research. Arriving in Australia after an ocean-bound trip from South America, the Drive Around The World team is praising the performance of the Mud-Terrain T/A® KM tire, one of the world's most durable and respected off-road tires.
"It really is quite amazing what this team is attempting to do," said Michaela Yasin, brand manager for BFGoodrich Tires in Canada. "The BFGoodrich Mud-Terrain T/A KM has been beaten, banged and subjected to nearly every form of terrain you can imagine on this expedition and they're only half way done. No other tire company can claim their tire has survived such a demanding road trip."
After the team crosses Australia, they will take a northerly course toward the arctic circle of Siberia. To date, fund raising efforts have raised $50,000 toward a goal of $1 million. The expedition‘s distance-learning program, which aims to foster curiosity within schoolchildren, has answered more than 4,000 questions posed by students via the Internet from around the world.
"A high profile around the world expedition places unique demands on a tire so we needed a tire that would perform well under every road condition imaginable--and something and would look great on the vehicle too" says Nick Baggerly, team captain and expedition leader. "Thus far the LONGITUDE Expedition team and vehicles have encountered driving conditions that have included cratered and pockmarked gravel in Costa Rica to the arid scrub brush of middle-Patagonia. This gives you an idea of what our BFGoodrich® Mud Terrain T/A® KM's are up against."
When planning for the LONGITUDE expedition, the Drive Around the World team considered dozens of tires. They needed a tough, durable, and capable tire that could provide superior traction in the most extreme conditions and perform well, be it on the highway, rocks, mud, sand or sharp desert terrain.
"We knew that BFGoodrich tires consistently exceed the demands of Paris-Dakar so we looked within BFGoodrich for a tire that could take this type of sustained punishment over the course of a nine-month expedition," says Baggerly. "The tires have been outstanding in a variety of conditions. Whether the road is good to us or whether the road treats us really bad, the tread pattern has deep lugs that really dig down into the mud to move us along."
