SOLBERG TAKES SUBARU TO THE PODIUM IN GREECE
After a hard-fought battle throughout the race, Petter Solberg of the 555 Subaru World Rally Team took third position overall in the 50th Rally of Greece. Fords Markko Märtin finished in top spot and Carlos Sainz placed second in a Citroën. Subarus Tommi Mäkinen finished in fifth, combining with Solberg to earn 10 Manufacturers points for Subaru.
Solberg was in a pitched battle with Sainz and recovered from a small spin in the penultimate stage only to get caught behind Citroëns Colin McRae who was struggling with throttle difficulties.
Im a little bit upset. I tried my best and did end up taking some risks today, but Ive had to settle for third place, said Solberg. It was tough on the second last stage, as I could just not pass Colin. I went to the left, to the right, and at one point I actually hit his car, but thats just too bad. I suppose that Im happy with third, but disappointed at the same time. Still, I have a good feeling in the car and Im looking forward to Cyprus.
Round seven of the FIA 2003 World Rally Championship starts in just two weeks time, when crews move to the island of Cyprus. Based around the holiday resort of Limassol, the event bears a close resemblance to the Acropolis, presenting a series of rocky, dry stages. Following a ceremonial start on Thursday, June 19, crews will contest a total of 341.05 competitive kilometres over three days.
