McGEER WINS A FOURTH CONSECUTIVE BAIE-DES-CHALEURS RALLY
Reigning Canadian rally driving champion Tom McGeer won the fifth round of the Subaru Canadian Rally Championship in Baie-des-Chaleurs, near New Richmond, Québec, on Saturday. In his first event in five months, McGeer finished just over a minute ahead of his Subaru Canada team-mate, Pat Richard, both driving Impreza WRXs. Richard's second-place finish returned him to the exclusive lead of the championship. Third place went to Andrew Comrie-Picard in a Mitsubishi Lancer.
"I had a blast, which is the ultimate goal this season," said McGeer, who has cut back his schedule to just three or four events to spend more time with his young family. "It's more enjoyable when you don't have to worry about the championship. There's less pressure."
Instead, this year, the pressure is on Pat Richard, who arrived at the Baie-des-Chaleurs tied with Sylvain Erickson for this years driving championship. Now, with 65 points, Richard has a 15-point lead on second-place Erickson with four races left this season.
In all, six Subarus finished in the top ten at Baie-des-Chaleurs, including Peter Thomson who placed fourth, Sylvain Vincent in sixth, Joel Levac in eighth and Julien Pilon in ninth, all in Impreza WRXs. Nova Scotia's John Paynter was in good shape until he was forced to retire after rolling his Impreza WRX.
The Subaru Canadian Rally Championship, presented by Yokohama, continues with the first-ever Rallye Ste-Agathe on September 6th and 7th.
