Mäkinen Takes Points In Sanremo

Tommi Mäkinen put in a consistent performance at the wheel of his Impreza WRC 2003 to finish in the top ten and collect Manufacturers' Championship points for the 555 Subaru World Rally team in Sanremo. Citroën's Sebastien Loeb won the Italian rally, bringing him to within two points of Drivers' Championship leader Richard Burns, who finished seventh.

"It's not been a good rally for us," said Team Principal David Lapworth. "We expected to be closer to the leaders so the end result has been disappointing. That's not been Tommi's fault, he's done a good job on the stages and it got us a couple of Manufacturers' points, but clearly we have work to do. Hopefully Corsica will be a different story."

Solberg, who has been consistently among the front-runners in this season's rallies, was forced to retire on the first day when his car ran out of fuel two kilometres short of the service area on stage six.

The Tour de Corse, round twelve of the 2003 WRC, begins in just two weeks on the French Island of Corsica. Another classic asphalt rally, and the second of three such events in October, the Tour is renowned for its twisty stages and varying quality of road surface. The event starts from the town of Ajaccio on Friday, October 17th. MTM
